Iron Removal
Water is treated using different devices to combat a variety of issues, but a high level of iron is among the most common. Iron is present in soil, pipes and mechanisms that move water between the source and your fixtures. For this reason, it can frequently build up in your water to levels considered too high – sometimes even damaging your pipes and fixtures.
If you suspect high iron levels in your water, especially if you have a well and the water supply is not treated elsewhere, call Larry & Sons Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. We provide iron removal water treatment systems for customers across the Hagerstown, MD area.
Iron Water Problems
Iron is not likely to make anyone sick in your family, though extremely high iron levels have been linked to some health issues. More often than not, iron in your water will result in damage and discoloration to your fixtures, clothing and beverages.
Usually, iron comes out of the tap clear and odorless. However, as the water evaporates in your sink or bathtub, it leaves behind a reddish brown residue, often resulting in a stain that is hard to remove. A light stain is one thing, but water with high iron levels can turn the entire fixture a thick, reddish brown color. In some cases, bacterial iron will make it slimy as well. If you wash your clothes in water with high iron levels, it might stain as well, and it will often taste or smell a little odd.
Treating High Iron Water
There are many ways to remove excess iron from your water. If you have bacterial iron, chlorination can help with the use of a chemical feed pump or special cartridge system. Media filters are also effective at removing ferric iron, as it clings to itself when compressed into a tight space. Both options are relatively simple for domestic water supplies.
However, the hardest type of iron to remove is ferrous iron. Ferrous iron requires water softening or special oxidation/filtration. Water softening is a process by which small amounts of manganese and iron are removed by exchanging ions in your water supply. Often, this will increase the salinity level of your water so additional treatment with reverse osmosis is sometimes needed to make it safe for drinking.
