Acidity Level Problems
There are several reasons why a home’s water supply may be overly acidic. Excess chemicals can develop at city water treatment facilities. Outside contaminants can get into the water. The pipes might simply leech into the water and disturb the pH balance. Whatever the problem, when the pH level of your water drops below 7, it is considered too acidic.
The main concern for those with acidic water is the damage it can do to fixtures. Green or blue stains in your sinks and toilets are due to high acidity in copper pipes. Iron pipes tend to leech anyway, but the problem will grow much worse when acidity is high.
Reducing Acid Levels
Acid neutralizers are used to balance the pH level of your water supply and reduce damage caused by high acid levels. Usually for slightly low pH levels, a simple chemical feed pump will get the job done. These will use a pH neutralizer, usually chlorine, to level out the pH and keep the water safe and healthy.
However, for lower pH levels, a more direct approach is needed. In these cases, crushed and screened limestone is sometimes added to the supply through a backwashing acid neutralizer tank. If the pH levels are even lower still, typically below 5.5, magnesium oxide can be dissolved into the water to reduce acidity. If this is done, beware that additional treatment may be necessary as the added magnesium can increase water hardness.
