Septic Problems to Watch For

Homeowners often don’t realize anything is wrong with their septic systems until it is much too late. The inlet drains might get clogged or the entire system will get backed up due to non–degradable products that shouldn’t be flushed. It sometimes takes weeks or months before the symptoms start to show and it becomes clear there is a major issue. Only then do you know it’s time to call for professional septic service.

Although it can be difficult to know if a problem is growing within your septic system, here are some things to watch for:

  • Flushing the Wrong Things – Avoid flushing oil and grease or any non–flushable items like cigarettes, tissues, paper towels or other items that don’t break down in water.
  • Garbage Disposal – While garbage disposals are highly recommended for city homes where you have a central sewer line hookup, it’s recommended that those who use septic tanks don’t use a garbage disposal. The food items and excess waste water can clog the septic tank fast. Instead of a garbage disposal, compost is recommended for food waste whenever possible.
  • Chemicals – If you flush chemicals like bleach, pesticide, or paint down drains, it can do damage to the filters and lines in a septic tank, causing them to clog or grow inefficient at transferring waste between chambers.
  • Property Issues – Trees and shrubs, digging, or large items placed on the drainage field can all cause problems. Make sure your leech field is a clear space without any buildings on top of it. You should also remove any trees or plants that root in or near your septic tank.

Keeping these basic tips in mind, you can avoid most septic tank problems. Specifically, you should watch for slower drainage, backup in your drains, tanks filling up faster than normal or any leakage outside. Of course, many systems are equipped with an alarm if septic tank levels rise too high. If these things happen, you should call a professional for septic tank repair immediately.
